About the Speaker
Dr. Alexandra Hernandez Lydia Hernandez, PhD, MPH
Professional Researcher/Associate Professor
University of California, San Francisco/Touro University California
Dr. Hernandez is a Professional Research Epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She has a doctorate in Epidemiology and a Master's of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). She chose epidemiology because she wished to conduct research that was directly impactful to underserved populations, and she focuses her scientific inquiry on research questions that may improve health and quality of life among populations most in need of support. She began work with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in people living with HIV (PLWH) in 2007. She is the co-investigator or principal investigator on several HPV-related national and international projects. She was a co-investigator and lead of “The AHHA Study: Aging, HIV, and Anal HPV: Anal HPV infection and anal HSIL among HIV-infected MSM aged 50+ years”. She is also the PI on several other small projects, including the pilot of a patient-centered cervical cancer screening program in Gondar, Ethiopia, and a pilot study evaluating psychological distress and cervical HPV among women living with HIV in Puerto Rico and Mexico. Her research has recently expanded to HPV and oropharyngeal cancer, and she is the PI on two NIH-NIDCR-funded studies: a qualitative study examining knowledge of oral HPV and oropharyngeal cancer and access to oral health care, and a study comparing home to clinic testing of oral HPV infection. Dr. Hernandez also holds a teaching faculty position at Touro University California, where she teaches and mentors students. When not working, she can be found raising children and dogs, practicing yoga, gardening, and she recently started throwing pottery.
