About the Speaker

Derek W. Ren, B.S., UCLA College of Letters and Science, UCLA School of Nursing Research Affiliate

Staff Research Associate I

UCLA College of Letters and Science, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Derek Ren conducts research under Dr. Wiley focused on improving early detection of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), a precursor to anal cancer. Derek Ren holds a B.S. from UCLA’s College of Letters and Science and is a Research Affiliate at the UCLA School of Nursing. His work evaluates the performance of screening tools, including APTIMA, HC2, cytology, and high-resolution anoscopy (HRA). Their findings highlight the value of molecular testing, alone or in combination with other screening methods, in improving the detection of precancerous lesions. This supports integrating advanced diagnostic tools into screening protocols to enhance early diagnosis and reduce cancer risk. Future directions include exploring the potential of at-home self-sampling approaches, building on insights from recent public health innovations.
