About the Speaker
Eric Joon Yang, MD, PhD
Clinical Professor
Stanford University School of Medicine
Dr. Yang is a practicing anatomic pathologist with clinical expertise in gynecologic pathology and cytopathology. He completed his residency and fellowships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical school, and is board-certified in anatomic pathology and cytopathology. His research interest involves the novel application of technology to the practice of pathology.
His research focuses on the pathogenesis and screening of HPV-related squamous lesions of the lower anogenital tract. He is currently investigating the application of in vivo microscopy (IVM) for the screening of HPV-related squamous dysplasia of the lower anogenital tract. His research is funded by the NIH and he has conducted a prospective clinical study that establishes proof-of-principle that HPV-related dysplasia can be diagnosed using IVM technology and that IVM images are diagnostically noninferior to H&E images.
In his role as Director of the Computational Pathology and Digital Innovation Research Program, Dr. Yang has initiated numerous projects that capitalize on the recent digitization of the Stanford Pathology department as well as Stanford’s rich collaborative environment with computer and data scientists. These projects include the application of AI to all aspects of pathology practice, including the automation of pathology workflow, identification of rare cellular events, quantification of biomarkers, and creation of a virtual consultation portal from curated pathology cases. His mission is to innovate, deploy, and democratize AI-assisted pathology tools to positively transform and modernize the practice of anatomic pathology.
