About the Speaker

Isabella Rosa-Cunha, Associate Professor of Medicine

Associate Professor of Medicine

University of Miami

I am an Associate Professor with the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the NCI-designated Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (Sylvester). My interest is in minorities and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and complications, including anal cancer. I am the director of clinical research for the Miller School of Medicine (MSOM), ensuring clinical research studies are conducted safely, ethically, and in compliance with university and funding agency regulations and guidelines, and providing guidance and recommendations for the growth and development of clinical research at MSOM. At Sylvester, I am a member of the Cancer Control Research Program and the Protocol Review Monitoring Committee. My training as a Clinical Immunology fellow caring for HIV-infected individuals and work as an infectious disease physician at the University of Miami and at Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) gave me the opportunity to work with minorities affected by HPV diseases, allowing my research to evolve in a series of local and external collaborations.
With the support of the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC), and Sylvester, I successfully created the Anal Dysplasia Clinic at Sylvester and JMH, offering the only center dedicated to the screening and study of anal cancer in men and women in South Florida. Currently, I am the local principal investigator (PI) for the Anal Cancer HSIL Outcomes Research (ANCHOR) study, a large multi-center, NCI clinical trial on anal cancer prevention; the results were reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, and have led to the first U.S. federal guidelines on anal screening programs for individuals living with HIV.  I am the PI for recent granted RO1 on the “screening strategies and social determinants of health among people with high risk of anal cancer”. I am the Co-PI of the NCI U54 grant with the University of Miami Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Sylvester Argentina Consortium for Research and Training in Virally Induced AIDS Malignancies. I am an active member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS) - I am part of the IANS task force that designed the guidelines for anal cancer prevention screening and the co-chair for IANS Implementation Committee and Task Force. I have also served as a reviewer for AIDS Care and STDs for several articles in the field of HIV and anal dysplasia.
In collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, colleagues and I established the Women’s Integrated Services for Health (WISH Clinic), dedicated to HIV primary care for women with HIV and the Women Anal Dysplasia Clinic, dedicated to anal cancer prevention in women with HIV. I am the physician in charge of these very successful clinics, and we continue looking into factors that may affect the life and health of these women, including anal dysplasia and anal cancer.
I have also worked in collaboration with the University of Miami viral oncology laboratory, the Division of Colorectal Surgery, and Division of Epidemiology and Public Health. These collaborations have resulted in federal funding support from the NCI/NIH and HRSA/Department of Health and Human Services. The results of my original work have been presented at several local, national, and international conferences and published in prestigious journals.
