About the Speaker
Doctor Manuel Valencia Echeverria, General Surgery Resident
Surgery Resident
UNAM / ISSSTE
Born in 1994 in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico, I was educated entirely within the public education system.
During my high school years, I pursued technical degrees in music with a specialization in guitar at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Michoacán, as well as in clinical laboratory science and electronics. In 2012, I was awarded first place in the XI National Literary Expression Contest “La Juventud y la mar”. That same year, I began medical school at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, where I conducted the study “Incidence of scoliosis, associated factors, and its relationship with school age in E.S.T. 132, Zamora, Michoacán.” I also served as an instructor in parasitology during my undergraduate studies.
To support my education, I worked in various manual labor jobs. In 2019, I began practicing formally as a general physician, working in community clinics and pharmacy-affiliated practices in my hometown. In 2021, I established my own pharmacy (which was sold prior to the beginning of my specialty training) and later joined the State Health Department of Aguascalientes, coordinating primary care programs and delivering training sessions for patients, healthcare staff, and fellow professionals.
In 2022, I was selected through Mexico’s National Medical Residency Examination to pursue a residency in General Surgery at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), currently training at Hospital General Dr. Fernando Quiroz Gutiérrez. Since then, I have completed ATLS certification (American Heart Association) and presented several academic works, including:
