About the Speaker
John Michael Berry-Lawhorn, MD
Retired Clinical Professor of Medicine and Attending Physician
UCSF and Farabi Wellness Center
Dr. J. Michael Berry-Lawhorn is a retired Clinical Professor of Medicine with a recall appointment at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He is a medical oncologist who has spent over 33 years in the field of anal neoplasia, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of anal precancerous lesions and early anal cancer. He is widely recognized for working with Drs. Joel Palefsky and Naomi Jay in pioneering the use of high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) to examine and biopsy abnormalities in the anal canal, a technique that has become a cornerstone in the early detection and management of precancerous anal lesions and cancer. The earliest form of anal cancer, superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SISCCA) may be found during careful HRA recognizing and biopsying abnormal vascular patterns during treatment and follow-up of patients with anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. Dr. Berry-Lawhorn’s clinical focus was on teaching high-resolution anoscopy, conservative management of SISCCA avoiding radiation, and developing better screening approaches for anal cancer prevention, specifically in women. He currently lives in Las Vegas with his husband, Leo. When not traveling, Dr. Berry-Lawhorn still performs HRA one day per week at the Farabi Wellness Center in Las Vegas.
