Renske Steenbergen is Professor of Experimental Pathology at the Department of Pathology, Amsterdam UMC and Cancer Center Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She obtained her MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Leiden and received her PhD degree cum laude from VU University Amsterdam in 1997. In 1999, she was awarded a fellowship by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying HPV-induced carcinogenesis and their translation into clinical applications. By integrating comprehensive molecular analyses of in vitro models with studies of cross-sectional and prospectively collected clinical specimens, she has pioneered the development and validation of DNA methylation and microRNA biomarkers for cervical and anal cancer screening and for risk stratification of HPV-induced precancerous lesions. More recently, her work has expanded to the development of non-invasive strategies for early cancer detection using self-collected samples, such as urine.
